Our route to the far west takes us through the ANCIENT KINGDOM OF WESSEX, which gives us an opportunity to visit the historic city of WELLS – England’s smallest city. Wells has one of the finest cathedrals in the land and one of the oldest surviving medieval streets in Europe. We also visit GLASTONBURY – the legendary burial place of King Arthur and an area steeped in mystery and legend.

Our journey continues across the rich pastures of SOMERSET and DEVON, and on into Cornwall before crossing mysterious BODMIN MOOR, once the haunt of smugglers and highwaymen. We will be based for 2 nights in PENZANCE, an ancient market town situated in the shelter of MOUNT’S BAY whose pirates were immortalised in the famous opera by Gilbert and Sullivan. Our hotel, situated just across from the seafront, commands unrivalled views across to ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT.

On Sunday we take a spectacular drive along the Atlantic coast of Cornwall to LAND’S END, the extreme south western tip of the British mainland. This area of wild and magnificent countryside has a higher concentration of prehistoric monuments than anywhere else in Britain. We also visit picturesque and quaint ST IVES, one of Cornwall’s most beautiful and atmospheric coastal towns which features an artists’ colony, and houses its own branch of the TATE GALLERY. St Ives has recently been voted to be amongst the very best beaches in the world! On our return journey through Cornwall, you will have time to visit TINTAGEL, with its awe inspiring castle ruins (legendary home of King Arthur), and the ancient port of BOSCASTLE, with its rugged and beautiful coastline. We will also make a short stop in Devon’s capital city of EXETER, to see its fine cathedral.
