MYSTERIOUS SOMERSET & BEYOND
Friday 13 - Sunday 15 March (ACS In-Service Day)
This tour explores
magical Somerset and Wiltshire in the heart of the
English countryside, beautiful counties steeped in myths
and legends.
Our journey west will take
us through Wiltshire and back into the dim distant world
of pre-history with a visit to STONEHENGE, one of the
most famous World Heritage Sites, whose mysteries are
still unexplained , and about which endless books have
been written. Also dating from this period, we visit the
haunting and mysterious sites of AVEBURY and SILBURY
HILL, which many people find as impressive, although
less well known, than Stonehenge.
Our tour will also
take us to historic GLASTONBURY, now famous for its
annual rock concert held in July, but, in the middle
ages, it was one of the most visited places of
pilgrimage in the whole o f England. It has close
associations with King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere,
who are buried in the grounds of its ancient Abbey.
Glastonbury is believed to be the site of the mythical
land of ’Avalon’ and features in the search for the Holy
Grail. It also has biblical connections, as legend says
Joseph of Arimathia came here and built a wattle and
daub church on the site where the Abbey now stands.
CHEDDAR GORGE beautifully set in the Mendip
hills, the town of Cheddar gave its name to the
world-famous Cheese. You will have time to buy some
cheese and also explore the Cheddar Caves made of white
limestone, and containing excellent examples of
stalactites and stalagmites and the bones of
pre-historic man.
